Taylor Made has finally done it, they have made a 460 cubic centimeter driver with movable weight. The new TaylorMade R7 460 Driver is their largest driver ever made, it is 10 cubic centimeters larger than the r5. TaylorMade R7 460 Driver has several new advancements that made it possible to put movable weight technology in a head that large without making the driver too heavy to swing.
I took the TaylorMade R7 460 Driver out to the range and tried to get a feel for how the ball would react. I noticed right off the bat that when the weighting was set for a draw, the ball would turn up to fifteen yards left. As a player that hits a natural draw, I decided that it would be better to put the weights in the neutral position, with the 14 gram weight in the toe and the two gram weight in the heel, this may seem like it would be a fade bias, but there is a built in draw bias to the club. Once I had the club set to neutral, I was able to control the ball flight much better. I could hit both a draw and a fade with ease.
As far as on the course performance, the TaylorMade R7 460 Driver was a great performer, I hit the ball a long way. It was a little difficult to control exactly how far the ball would draw or fade, so I ended up just off the fairway a few times when I tried to turn the ball over. When it came to controlling the trajectory, the TaylorMade R7 460 Driver did not quite match up to the 425 TP, I had to really try to keep the ball low, due to the deeper center of gravity, the ball just seemed to launch high no matter what. This is just what some players need, since they have some trouble hitting the ball in the air.
